In his first stint with the Aggies, he led the team to 6 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association gold medals and a gold medal in the 2nd Varsity 8 at the inaugural American Collegiate Rowing Association championships in 2008. He built the program into a regional and national power in 8 seasons at UC Santa Barbara (2008-2016). The Gauchos earned two Cal Cup wins at the San Diego Crew Classic, numerous medals at WIRA, and the 3rd most medals of any program in the history of ACRA up to that point. In the three years back at UC Davis prior to the Covid shutdown, Coach Stahl moved the Aggies into the top 12 programs at ACRA.
Coach Des has been named WIRA coach of the year twice, ACRA West region coach of the year three times, and ACRA national coach of the year once in 2016. He served as President of ACRA for four years (2013-2017), leading the organization and helping run the championship regatta for over 1500 athletes yearly. Three of his athletes have gone on to represent the United States internationally.
Coach is a Sacramento native, who obtained a degree in Computer Engineering at Santa Clara University, and an additional masters degree in Kinesiology from Sacramento State.
Nathan is from the Sacramento Valley, growing up in Lodi. He attended UC Santa Barbara, and began his rowing adventure there in the fall of 2018. Like some of our recent grads, Nathan lost his 2nd and 3rd racing seasons to the covid shutdown. He persevered to help start UCSB's rebuild in 2021-22. During his time there he was part of their gold medal Varsity 4 at WIRAs and medaled at Head of the Charles.
After graduation, Nathan started his coaching career as the head coach for Channel Islands Rowing Club, working mostly with their junior program. He recently moved back to Sacramento and will be helping Coach Stahl develop the entire program, with primary emphasis on helping recruit and training the novice squad.
